This commission was set up in 2001 to develop a better understanding of fire matters throughout the European Union.

Its work to date has focussed upon establishing a relationship with European Commission officials and raising issues of strategy and policy related to Europe.

It has particular concerns to represent the views of CTIF organisations in Member States and those countries seeking to become members of the European Union.

Current work is supportive of a review of fire safety throughout the EU, the gathering of better data on fires and improving professional fire networks.

Highlights from last meeting

Statistics

Discussion on the best approach to developing a higher quality of fire statistics in Europe: matter had been raised with the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) of the European Union. There was confirmation from the CPU that this was a very interesting and worthwhile project. A real consensus must be gained to progress this work in Europe.

Transinstitutional Fire Management

This activity involves drawing together all interested fire organisations in Europe. The suggestion is that a joint meeting be held with Europe, led by CTIF, to enable better access and information. The need is to find common interests and approaches.

Terrorism

Benefit may be derived from an emergency experts conference of civil authorities to share current and proposed practices. Initial emphasis could be placed on chemical, biological, radioactive or nuclear decontamination for the public.
